Salvador is known as Brazil´s “cultural capital”, The historical downtown streets take tourists to the beginnings of Brazil’s history. Until 1763, Salvador hosted the capital of the Portuguese Crown in the Americas, and some monuments built during this period are still preserved. At Pelourinho, there are more than 800 buildings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Several churches and museums complete the historic centre, where during slavery the Pillory (Pelourinho)was used for punishment. The city stands out historically, too, for having been until the eighteenth century the main port in the southern hemisphere. Bahia always had a magnificent coast line, with the greatest number of beaches in the country. Nature has been generous and the many beaches that Salvador has on its 50 kilometer long coastline explains easily why the city is so popular with water sports enthusiasts.
